ePetition details

We the undersigned petition the council to hold a car-free day on 22 September 2019, in line with World Car Free Day, to encourage individuals to cycle, walk and use public transport, in order to reduce car emissions and raise awareness of sustainable travel.

An Exeter car-free day is proposed for 22 September 2019, in line with World Car Free Day, which would involve closing the roads to cars in the centre of Exeter. Encouraging individuals to cycle, walk and use public transport would reduce car emissions and raise awareness of sustainable travel.

Vehicle emissions are one of the main sources of outdoor air pollution, particularly in cities. Transport is also the fastest growing source of fossil-fuel CO2 emissions, the largest contributor to climate change. World Car Free Day is an excellent opportunity to show that the City of Exeter is at the forefront of the drive to address the environment and climate emergency. Such an event would also raise awareness of sustainable travel. Moreover, it would allow invaluable public and collective reflection on the lessons of this experience.

A car-free day would also highlight the numerous benefits of going car-free to individuals, including reduced air pollution, and the promotion of walking and cycling in a safer environment. It is possible to get drivers out of their cars in ways that will not only be tolerable, but enjoyable!

Such an event would help to demonstrate what needs to happen to make a car-less (or less-car) urban transport paradigm actually work. The World Car-Free Day could be a showcase for just how our city, the proud and progressive Exeter, might function long-term without cars.
